Are Tile Countertops Making a Comeback?
Bringing a Controversial Classic from the Past into the Modern World!
Rachel here! MAROS Designs intern for the Summer taking a dive into tile design!
The 70s and 80s are making a huge comeback in todays world of design, but just how big of a comeback is it? Tile countertops have been a controversial statement piece for some time now but have been pushed to stay in the past. I’d like to convince you otherwise!
Nod to Nostalgia
Tile countertops peaked in the design world back in the 1970s and 1980s and were prized for their price accessibility and creative potential. Overtime, they lost their spotlight with issues such as grout stains and uneven surfaces which cause a universal switch to seamless and even materials such as granite, quartz, and marble. So why has it made a comeback?
In today’s world of design, designers and homeowners are embracing their retro design flair with todays modern technology to conquer the issues of the past.
Customization Appeal
Countertops have grown into being statement pieces in a room, so adding some bold creativity to functionality has revived this retired design style. Having the freedom to mix-and-match patterns and colors create a piece in a homeowners space that cannot be replicated exactly - making them unique.
Sustainability and Affordability
Tile countertops can act as a budget-friendly alternative to the traditional stone countertops you see most often. For renovators on a tight budget, tile can offer a stylish way to upgrade your space without breaking the bank.
Regarding sustainability practices, tile’s low-waste manufacturing process and long-term lifespan aid is regain of popularity in todays world.
Performance Improvements
Popular past complaints from tile countertops would consist of stained grout, cracks or chips in the tile pieces, and difficulty cleaning the surface. Advances in grout technology have resolved the staining issue as well as increased durability to help prevent cracking in the tiles.
So Trendy Comeback or Timeless Design?
While some may be hesitant to revisit the use of tile in their homes, versatility and affordability shows how design-forward it can be. With this fresh-take and advancements in materials, tile countertops may have made a permanent comeback!
